Presented is an 1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of Dick Conway (#89-5 pose) of the Boston Beaneaters posed in front of a simple studio backdrop. All N173 Old Judge cabinets are naturally rare, but this is a particularly noteworthy example in that it has an extremely rare red mount. According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, "The vast majority of cabinet mounts are yellow in color. However, cabinets have also been found with brown, black, pink, and (in a few rare cases) red mounts." During the past forty years, we have had the opportunity to offer only two N173 cabinets with a red mount, which appeared as lot #19 in REA's Fall 2014 auction (realizing $5,700) and Lot #82 in our Spring 2016 auction (realizing $9,600). The offered card is a tremendous rarity and of great note to Old Judge scholars and collectors. While condition is a secondary concern given the importance of the mount color, the cabinet displays a number of obvious condition flaws including three tack holes, a piece missing on the left edge, a surface scratch on his face, and writing on the reverse. The photo contrast is outstanding and full of detail. This is an extraordinary rarity of legendary proportions from the N173 set, one of the most revered and substantial of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
