1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of Hall of Famer “Smiling” Mickey Welch of the New York Giants (pose #486-2). This is a stunning Hall of Famer example from one of the nineteenth century's most revered sets. All Old Judge cabinets are extremely desirable, especially Hall of Famers, and Mickey Welch, of course, is one of the most prominent of all nineteenth-century Hall of Famers. This card has an 1888 copyright date. That year marked the Giants first pennant, as Welch and teammate Tim Keefe accounted for 61 of the team's 84 victories. The image on the card is very bold with strong contrast. The actual photograph has a surface scratch and small crease just above the copyright date. The mount has moderate wear to the corners (predominately the top right), with some light edge wear and soiling. The blank reverse has minor staining and evidence of album removal. Encapsulated as "Authentic" by SGC. This is a very attractive and extremely rare card of Hall of Famer Mickey Welch, from the N173 Old Judge series, one of card collecting’s most substantial and desirable nineteenth-century cabinet-card issues.
