1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of George Van Haltren from the Chicago White Stockings (#471-4 pose). This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby find of ten N173s, including three Hall of Famers, discovered by a non-collector in the Midwest, all consigned to this auction. Van Haltren was a star player. His career spanned the years from 1887 to 1903, making this N173 one of his earliest cards as a player. Van Haltren's lifetime batting average of .316 makes him one of the best hitters of the nineteenth century. Many baseball scholars consider him to be worthy of induction to the Hall of Fame. This is a very presentable example with outstanding photo contrast. The photograph has some black markings in the background and the mount has moderate wear. The blank reverse has a heavy crease in the upper right, paper loss and a tape stain in the center, and light soiling. This is a very presentable lower-grade sample from one of the most revered and substantial of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues. Encapsulated as Authentic by SGC (submitted by REA).
