Graded GOOD 2 by SGC (submitted by REA). Very attractive 1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card featuring Hall of Famer John Ward (#478-9 pose) of the New York Giants. This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby find of ten N173s, including three Hall of Famers, discovered by a non-collector in the Midwest, all consigned to this auction. Ward is recognized as one of the most important and influential players of the nineteenth century. In addition to being a star pitcher, and later a standout shortstop for the New York Giants during the 1880s, he was also one of Major League Baseball's few true scholars. Ward was a college graduate (Penn State), and he later earned a law degree from Columbia. In 1890, Ward served as the leader of the short-lived renegade Players League. The card is extremely crisp and clean, both front and back, with particularly strong photo contrast and detail. A heavy crease on the upper left portion and light soiling on the blank reverse account for the assigned grade. This is an exceptionally strong, high-quality Old Judge cabinet card of Hall of Famer John Ward. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
