Extremely rare, this sample card from the N403 Yum Yum Tobacco series of 1888 features Danny Richardson (portrait) of the New York Giants. Yum Yum Tobacco was a brand of the August Beck Company of Chicago. Advanced collectors have appreciated the mystique of the rarest pre-1900 baseball-card issues for decades. Whether it is because of the brand name, their unusual look, extreme rarity, or a combination of all of these factors, few card issues command the respect that Yum Yum Tobacco cards do among the most serious collectors. It is always a privilege to offer a Yum Yum, regardless of condition. Encapsulated "Authentic" by SGC due to a slightly irregular cut on all four sides, which may be original as issued but is unusual enough to preclude it from grading numerically. Aside from this obvious flaw, the card is well centered with light contrast and even rounding to the corners. The blank reverse displays moderate soiling as well as paper loss on the bottom right corner. Despite its modest condition, this card remains a very presentable sample from this extremely rare and desirable nineteenth-century set. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++.
