Rare team composite cabinet card featuring portrait images of 11 members of the 1889 San Francisco Haverlys, a member of the California League. Each member is pictured in formal attire and is identified in print (last name only) below his respective image. The players represented here are Pete Sweeney, Charlie Sweeney, Joseph Shea, George Hanley, Mike Finn (Mgr.), Hypolite Perrier, Pop Sweet, Reuben Levy, Dad Clarke (spelled "Clark" on the card), Len Stockwell (Capt.), and Pete Meegan. Both the year ("1889") and team name ("San Francisco Base Ball Club") are printed on the front. The photographer's credit is lettered along the base: "Abell & Priest/Bancroft's Historic Building 723 Market St., S. F." The Haverlys were a member of the California League from 1883 through 1892. Although the California League was a minor-league circuit, the following pictured members of the Haverlys played at the Major League level at some point in their respective careers: Clarke, Meegan, Stockwell, Sweet, P. Sweeney, and C. Sweeney. California League team cabinets from the 1880s are extremely rare, and this example is no exception. This is the first 1889 Haverlys team cabinet photo we have ever offered and we have seen just two others dating from the 1880s (one of which is also featured in this auction). It is both an extremely desirable nineteenth-century baseball cabinet and a historically significant photograph documenting the rich tradition of early professional baseball in California. The photo remains in Excellent to Mint condition. The mount displays moderate border wear. 4.25 x 6.5 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
