Extremely attractive low-grade N300 Mayo's Cut Plug of Hall of Famer Cap Anson dating from his playing days as first baseman and manager of the Chicago Colts (later Cubs). This card originates from a new-to-the-hobby collection of nineteenth-century cards that had been carefully saved in the pages of a scrapbook for over a century. This card was carefully removed from the scrapbook by a professional conservator using deionized water. It was submitted to SGC for grading with this information and SGC graded the card GOOD 2. There are very few cards of Anson as a player. The Mayo's Cut Plug is one of the very few. This is a very attractive example, with a bold portrait and outstanding centering. The evidence of scrapbook removal on the blank reverse accounts for the assigned grade. A premier batsman and leader, Anson is widely regarded as the foremost on-field baseball figure of the nineteenth century. He led the National League in hitting three times and was the first man to get 3,000 hits. As a manager, he took his Chicago team to five pennants. Mayo's Cut Plug is the premier baseball card set from the 1890s. This is a desirable and relatively affordable example of one of Cap Anson's most classic cards from this extremely important and popular nineteenth-century series. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
