Graded EX 5 by PSA. One of only two examples graded at this level with none higher! 1889 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer John Clarkson with the Boston Nationals in a batting pose (pose #78-7). This is an unusual pose in that Clarkson, of course, was one of the greatest pitchers of the nineteenth century. In 1887, the year this card was issued, he led the league with 38 wins. Clarkson may have had good reason to be proud of his hitting abilities. In 1887 he stepped up to the plate 215 times, batting a very respectable .242, and hitting five home runs. This is an outstanding high-grade example, clean both front and back, with square corners, and featuring Clarkson posed in front of an elaborate studio backdrop. A very attractive high-grade example of one of the premier Hall of Famers of the Old Judge set. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
