Graded FR 1.5 by SGC. Rare sample card of St. Louis Browns owner Chris Von Der Ahe from the N172 Old Judge Brownie Champs series. The Brownie Champs set has always been among the most distinctive and popular of all Old Judges. Von Der Ahe was one of the most prominent team owners of the nineteenth century and is universally recognized as the second most desirable card in the entire Brownie Champs set (behind only Hall of Famer and future prominent team-owner Charles Comiskey). This card displays outstanding photo contrast, even corner wear, and centering toward the bottom left. There are several light surface creases visible on the blank reverse. A pencil notation and small spot of paper loss in the center of the back contribute to the assigned grade. We always try to offer a few classic N172s individually to show collectors that it is possible to collect the important pre-1900 cards without spending a fortune. This is a very attractive example of one of the key cards from the classic 1886 Brownies Champs subset that features portraits of players from this legendary championship team. Reserve $200.
