Exceedingly rare Joseph Hall imperial team cabinet photograph featuring the World's Champion New York Giants of the National League. This is a particularly unusual photograph of the Giants team posed in front of the stadium grandstand, with players all looking to their right rather than looking forward toward the camera. Hall took a number of different photographs of the club at the time, all of which are slightly different with regard to the players' head angles or body position. We have never seen this particular image before and, most important, we have never seen an 1888 Joseph Hall New York Giants cabinet card of this particular size (10 x 8 inches), as the few other known 1888 Giants cabinet cards are either the smaller variety (6.5 x 4.5 inches), or much larger (25 x 20 inches). Each player is identified in print along the base of the mount (by means of a corresponding number either on or near each player's respective image), including all six Hall of Fame players on the club: Tim Keefe, Roger Connor, John Montgomery Ward, Buck Ewing, Jim O'Rourke, and Mickey Welch (misspelled "Welsh"). Also pictured, standing in the center is manager Jim Mutrie. The remaining players featured here are Stump Weidman, Bill George, Ed Crane, Pat Murphy, Cannonball Titcomb, Elmer Foster, Danny Richardson, Willard Brown, Mike Tiernan, Gil Hatfield, George Gore, Elmer Cleveland, and Mike Slattery. The white letter caption, "The Giants" appears on the base of the photograph, as does Hall's copyright notice and the year, "1888," The back is blank on the offered example. Joseph Hall was the preeminent baseball photographer of the late 1880s and collectors have long revered Joseph Hall team cabinets as among the most highly prized of all nineteenth-century cabinet issues. The rarity of this card notwithstanding, it is also notable for its remarkable state of preservation. Aside from a tiny blemish on the side of Weidman's face, the photograph is in spectacular Near Mint to Mint condition, offering exceptional clarity. The mount displays only very minor edge wear and remains in Excellent to Mint condition. The extreme rarity of Joseph Hall team cabinets, the prominence of the Giants team, the inclusion of so many Hall of Famers, its unique size, and its extraordinary condition combine to make this card one of the best of all nineteenth-century team cards. Near perfect in all respects and one that would be a highlight of any advanced nineteenth century baseball or photography collection. Opening Bid $15,000. Estimate (open).
