N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet proof of pitcher Mike Mattimore. Produced by the Carrol Photographic Art Studio of New York. The posed studio photograph captures Mattimore "sliding" into a base, with his left arm extended into the air (pose #297-9). The Carrol Studio name appears both along the base of the mount and the reverse. This is one of 11 different poses of Mattimore featured in the N173 Old Judge set. Goodwin & Co. relied on local photography studios for the images used on its cards and the Carroll Studio was the provider of New York Giants player images in 1887. It should be noted that the player photos produced by the Carrol Studio were not only provided to Goodwin & Co. for commercial use, but were also often given to players, their families, or made available to the public as a means of advertising. This is one of several such N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet proofs, issued by various photographic studios, we have offered over the years. Mattimore played with four different teams during his brief Major League career (1897-1890): the New York Giants (1887; NL), the Philadelphia Athletics (1888-1889; AA), the Kansas City Cowboys (1889; AA), and the Brooklyn Gladiators (1890; AA). He retired with a lifetime record of 26-27 and a 3.83 ERA. The photo, which offers exceptional clarity, remains in Near Mint condition. The card (4.25 x 6.5 inches) displays light edge and is in Excellent condition overall. This would be a significant and worthy addition to even the most advanced nineteenth-century baseball collection. Reserve $1,500. Estimate (open).
