Presented is an extreme rarity in the world of postcard collecting: a 1909 W. W. Smith Ty Cobb postcard. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only example of this postcard that we know to exist. The postcard features an illustrated portrait of Cobb and is titled "The Mighty Cobb" in bold print at the base. It is labeled as a "World's Series Souvenir" at the top and a 1909 copyright by W. W. Smith appears in print directly below Cobb's illustration. This is one of three different postcards created by Smith in 1909, with the other picturing Wagner (also offered in this auction) and a third featuring Cobb and Wagner together. While little is known about this three-card set, it seems almost certain that it was published at the time of the 1909 World Series between Pittsburgh and Detroit. This is the first example of this Cobb postcard that we have ever seen! Graded FAIR 1.5 by SGC, the front of the postcard exhibits light toning and heavy creasing. The postcard reverse is dated and addressed with a message and Pittsburgh postmark from October 9, 1909. This is a very attractive and possibly unique example that would be at home in any advanced postcard or Ty Cobb collection. Opening Bid $2,500. Estimate (open).
