Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. Presented is an E98 "Set of 30" candy card featuring Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson, one of the key cards from this popular 1910-era issue. The manufacturer of E98 is unknown. Cards from this set may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E94 specifically); this is an entirely different set even though it uses many of the same subjects and poses. For many years, E98s were among the scarcest of the 1910-era caramel cards, but the recent “Black Swamp Find” has changed the population dramatically. E98s have always been very desirable, and their increased availability and noteworthiness due to the find may have actually increased the demand as more collectors have become familiar with the set. Do not be fooled by the modest assigned grade! This is an extremely attractive example that presents as Vg-Ex from the front, with a flawless image set against a bold red background, light wear at the corners, and outstanding centering. The back features the checklist for the set in crisp, bold brown print. A few small pieces of tape on the reverse account for the assigned grade. Caramel cards in general are much rarer than tobacco cards of the era. This is a superb and very attractive example of the legendary Christy Mathewson from this early twentieth-century candy issue.
