In the "old days," presented on Sundays, somewhere between the preliminary midget wrestling matches and the Roller Derby contests, gladiators of the ring squared off for dramatic battles. It seemed this was a world unto itself and Sunday was the only day when, flipping through the channels, a window, a glimpse into this strange world of competition was provided. Those were the days! Presented is a complete run of the three 36-card Wrestling All Stars sets produced by the Wrestling News magazine in 1982 (Series A and B) and 1983. These sets offer the first standard trading cards of legends like Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan, Jesse Ventura, and Ric Flair. The only way these sets could be purchased at the time of issue was as full cellophane wrapped sets via mail order through an ad in the Wrestling News or Wrestling Revue magazines for $5. Estimates for production are that fewer than 2,000 sets were produced. This set is very condition sensitive due to the color borders and the fact that most sets were sold tightly wrapped in cellophane. These are very attractive mid- to high-grade complete sets! This set collection consists of the following: 1) 1982 Series "A" Complete Set (36): 47% Nr/Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt, 33% Ex-Mt, and 20% Vg-Ex to Ex. Keys: #1 Andre The Giant (Vg-Ex), 2 Hulk Hogan (Ex+), 4 Ted DiBiase (Ex-Mt), and 27 Ric Flair (Nr/Mt+). 2) 1982 Series "B" Complete Set (36): 11% Nr/Mt, 28% Ex-Mt, and 61% Ex (including a few lesser). Keys: #13 Tito Santana (Ex+), 14 Sergeant Slaughter (Nr/Mt+), 20 Jesse Ventura (Ex+), and 25 The Iron Sheik (Ex-Mt). 3) 1983 Complete Set (36): 28% Nr/Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt, 22% Ex-Mt, and 50% Vg-Ex to Ex (including one Vg). Keys: #1 Billy Graham (Ex+), 7 Jimmy Snuka (Ex), 25 Jake Roberts (Nr/Mt), and 32 Lou Albano (Vg-Ex+). For generations of fans who grew up watching these innocent but thrilling spectacles on late Saturday night and early Sunday morning TV, these card sets will evoke strong memories. The sets harken back to a simpler age before blaring music, pyrotechnics, and catch phrases, when wrestling was a guilty pleasure, when these pioneers of athletics and entertainment broke new ground, and these giants ruled the world. Total: 3 sets, 108 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
