Extremely rare Kalamazoo Bats tobacco card, with printed advertising on reverse, of Philadelphia Athletics catcher Whitey Gibson. This newly discovered card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. Kalamazoo Bats with advertising on the reverse are especially rare and desirable. Graded POOR 1 by SGC (submitted by REA), this is a very attractive low-grade example with excellent detail, showcasing the Philadelphia ballpark's grandstands in the background, which is one of the trademark characteristics of Kalamazoo Bats. This card features outstanding photo contrast and light corner wear. A small spot of paper loss on the lower left corner is solely responsible for the assigned grade. The reverse features a boldly printed advertising back (which is of special note as most Kalamazoo Bats cards have blank backs). Kalamazoo Bats are noted both for their great rarity and unique design. This is a stunning nineteenth-century card and an extremely attractive Kalamazoo Bats sample. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+.
