Graded EX/NM 6 by SGC (submitted by REA). Only example graded at this level with none higher! Newly discovered 1887 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer John Clarkson with the Chicago White Stockings in a hands outstretched pose (pose #78-5). This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. Clarkson was one of the greatest pitchers of the nineteenth century. In 1887, the year this card was issued, he led the league with 38 wins. This is a very sharp-looking card, clean front and back, with square corners, strong photo contrast, and featuring Clarkson posed in front of an elaborate studio backdrop. Perfectly clean reverse. A very attractive high-grade example of one of the premier Hall of Famers of the Old Judge set. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
