Graded GOOD 2 by SGC (submitted by REA). Newly discovered "script series" N172 Old Judge card of Hall of Famer Roger Connor of the New York Giants (pose #88-4). This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. We believe the distinctive "script series" cards were issued in 1886 (although it is possible they date from early 1887). According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, Connor ranks as the tenth rarest Hall of Famer (out of twenty-eight) in the entire N172 set. Connor was one of the greatest sluggers of the nineteenth century. His 138 career home runs stood as the record until Babe Ruth exceeded it. The card displays light, even corner wear, a stain on the lower left edge, and near-perfect centering. The back of the card is lightly soiled and stains on the right edge are evident. A relatively affordable example of one of the highly prized Hall of Famers in the N172 Old Judge set. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
