Graded VG 3 by SGC (submitted by REA). Very high-grade example of 1887 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer Mike "King" Kelly (#254-6 pose), identified as "$10,000 Kelly." This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. Kelly earned this nickname when he was sold from Chicago to Boston following the 1886 season for this then-unheard-of sum. Perfectly clean front and back, with square corners, outstanding contrast and clarity. A small crease on the upper left corner keeps this gem from receiving a higher grade. This is one of the most popular poses of Kelly in the Old Judge series. This is an outstanding, extremely high-grade Old Judge of the legendary Mike "King" Kelly, one of nineteenth-century baseball's greatest stars. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
