Graded GOOD+ 2.5 by SGC (submitted by REA). Very striking 1887 N172 Old Judge example of Hall of Famer Ned Hanlon (pose #212-3) with an elaborate studio background. This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. Hanlon was a Major League ballplayer with six different teams from 1880 to 1892. He was a consistent player, accumulating over 1,300 hits during his career, but he is best known for his success as manager. Hanlon was the manager of the Baltimore Orioles from 1892 to 1898, a span during which the club won three pennants and two World Championships. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1996. This card has outstanding photo quality, four strong corners, and centering to the right. A couple spots of paper loss on the blank reverse account for the assigned grade. An exceptional modestly graded example of a particularly difficult-to-find Old Judge Hall of Famer. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
