Graded EX 5 by SGC (submitted by REA). Extremely rare 1886 N172 Old Judge "Spotted Tie" of Tom McLaughlin (pose #316-1). This newly discovered card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. The "Spotted Tie" series, featuring sixteen players from the New York Mets of the American Association, is one of the rarest and most desirable subsets of the N172 Old Judge set. Each player is featured in a portrait pose with his distinctive "Spotted Tie." Presented is an exceptionally strong example from this very rare series. Bright and clean, with excellent contrast, and light wear on the corners. Centered to the extreme top. The blank reverse is clean but lightly toned at the top. This is a magnificent, and for this important issue, exceptional high-grade example from the "Spotted Tie" series, which has always been considered to be among the most elusive and significant of all Old Judge subsets. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
