Graded EX 5 by SGC (submitted by REA). Presented is an extremely rare double-player card featuring Ed Swartwood (pose 449-4, tagging another player) of the Hamilton Mountaineers from the legendary N172 Old Judge set posed in an outdoor setting. This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, there are twenty-seven different "two-player" cards on which Goodwin & Co. identifies only one player by name on the card (as is the case with the offered example). The offered card presents with superb photo contrast and clarity, light corner wear, and centering slightly to the left. The blank reverse has a small mark on the lower half. This is a striking and unusual N172 example that would be a worthy addition to even the most advanced Old Judge collection! Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
