Graded GOOD+ 2.5 by SGC (submitted by REA). Very striking 1887 N172 Old Judge example of Hall of Famer Sam Thompson (pose #456-2) with an elaborate studio background. This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. In 1887 Thompson led the National League with 545 at-bats, 203 hits, 23 triples, 166 RBI (the highest RBI total in the nineteenth century), a .372 batting average, and a .571 slugging percentage. Do not be fooled by the modest assigned grade! This card is bright, crisp, and clean, with strong corners, centering to the right, and superb contrast and image quality. Downgraded from Vg-Ex due to a chip of paper loss along the right edge on the blank reverse. Collectors place much more significance on the strength of the image (which is outstanding in this case) instead of the technical grade. A tremendous N172 example of Sam Thompson worthy of any N172, Hall of Fame, or nineteenth-century card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
