Graded VG 3 by SGC (submitted by REA). Very attractive 1887 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer John Ward (pose #478-7). This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. Ward is recognized as one of the most important and influential players of the nineteenth century. In addition to being a star pitcher, and later a standout shortstop for the New York Giants during the 1880s, he was also one of Major League baseball's few true scholars. Ward was a college graduate (Penn State), and he later earned a law degree from Columbia. In 1890, Ward served as the leader of the short-lived renegade Players' League. Superb photo quality, no creases, strong corners, and centering toward the right. The blank reverse is mainly clean. A small surface imperfection on the upper left is solely responsible for the assigned grade. This is an extremely attractive example of one of the key Hall of Famer cards of the N172 Old Judge series. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
