Graded EX+ 5.5 by SGC. Presented is the key card of legendary Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from the extremely rare 1909 Topping & Co. Detroit Tigers Postcard series. Only nine examples of Cobb have ever been graded by PSA and SGC combined! We are very familiar with this particular card as this is the second time we have had the privilege of offering it. This card originally appeared as lot #205 in REA's Summer 2019 auction (realizing $22,800) and has been consigned to this auction directly from the purchaser at that sale. Originally graded VG-EX 4 by PSA, this card was described at the time as presenting in Excellent condition, and not surprisingly, SGC has agreed that the original grade was an overly conservative view by PSA of light album lines on the reverse. The impressive quality of the card speaks for itself and is superior to most (if not all) other Topping Cobbs graded at any level. At the time we first offered it, this card was the highlight of a newly discovered collection of fifteen Topping & Co. postcards, which remained in the possession of the family of the original owner, who very likely collected the cards at the time of issue while living in the Detroit area. The set includes players from the 1909 American League Champion Detroit Tigers. The fronts feature black-and-white player portraits in the center of a yellow six-point star. This is one of the most striking and visually exciting of all Ty Cobb cards, and is one of the rarest of all Ty Cobb cards. In fact, this is only the second example of this exceptionally rare postcard that we have offered in the last twenty years! The card presents with a flawless, crisp image and light touches of wear at the corners. The reverse has never been written on or mailed. This is an incredibly attractive example of one of Cobb's most elusive early cards and would be an exceptionally worthy addition to any Ty Cobb, Hall of Fame, or postcard collection. Reserve $5,000.
