Graded GOOD 2 by SGC (submitted by REA). Extremely attractive low-grade example of Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson in a throwing pose from the very scarce E95 Philadelphia Caramel series. This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. This 25-card set was issued in 1909 by the Philadelphia Caramel Co. of Camden, New Jersey. Mathewson, of course, is one of the key cards in the set. This is also one of Mathewson's most highly regarded cards from any set, and is considerably rarer than the popular T205 and T206 cards of Matty from the same era. This card is bright and crisp, both front and back, with a bold yellow background, flawless registration, lightly rounded corners, and outstanding centering. The creases in the upper right corner and light staining (more noticeable on the back) are responsible for the assigned grade. The reverse features a very boldly printed checklist for the set. It is interesting to note Mathewson’s name is misspelled “Matthewson” on this card. This is an extremely attractive low-grade example of one of Mathewson’s most striking cards from one of the most popular and colorful of all “E” card issues. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
