Very attractive low-grade example of Hall of Fame pitcher Cy Young from this extremely rare candy issue. This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. Because Mello-Mints are printed on such thin stock, they are usually found crinkled or heavily creased. This is an extremely crisp example of one of the key Hall of Famers in the set. Graded POOR 1 by SGC (submitted by REA), the card is bright and clean, both front and back, with deep, bright colors, moderate wear on the corners (the tip of the upper left is missing), and several creases mostly in the border areas. The card is centered to the far left. The Mello-Mint advertisement on the back is boldly printed in green against a brilliant off-white background. The price '1.00' is written in pencil on the reverse as well as a few small spots of paper loss. Caramel cards in general, of course, are rarely found in high grade, and this is especially so with Mello-Mints. This is an extremely attractive Mello-Mint example of the legendary Cy Young from one of prewar-card collecting's most condition-sensitive candy-card issues. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
