Official National League (Heydler) ball signed by six individuals, including Babe Ruth. Ruth's signature, which occupies its customary spot on the sweet spot, has been scripted in blue fountain pen and grades "4." The other signatures on the ball appear to be those of Jigger Statz, Hap O'Connor, Bob Twombly, Jimmy Mosloff, and Wally Hood. Signatures range from "2 to "6." The date "April 20, 1928" is written on a side panel. The signatures of Ruth, Statz, and O'Connor are scripted in blue fountain pen and appear to have been obtained at the same time. The signatures of Twombly (blue ball-point ink) and Hood (whose signature has been heavily enhanced) appear to have been added at a later date. (Hood played only one season in the Majors; in 1949, one year after Ruth died.) Statz was a member of Brooklyn in 1928 and Hap O'Connor was a minor-league umpire, so this ball may have been signed at an exhibition game. The red-and-black stitched ball, which dates to the 1926-1933 manufacturing period, displays moderate-to-heavily soiling and may have been game used. In Very Good condition overall. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
