This classic campaign poster pictures champions from various sports endorsing candidate Al Smith's bid for the presidency in 1928. Featured in the center of the poster are nine members of the New York Yankees, including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, each holding a bat with a single letter attached. Together the letters read "For Al Smith." To the left is a larger illustration of Babe Ruth in a batting pose. Other champions endorsing Al Smith in this poster include Knute Rockne, Gene Tunney, and John McGraw. Al Smith lost the election to Herbert Hoover but the Yankees had a better year, sweeping the Cardinals in the 1928 World Series in four games. This is one of the most highly regarded of all presidential campaign posters, and is universally recognized among collectors of presidential campaign material as the most valuable and desirable of all Al Smith campaign posters. The poster (26 x 21 inches; visible dimensions) displays a one-inch horizontal tear along the left border, moderate staining in the upper left and right corners, and a few light edge creases. The central image area; however, remains free of any significant flaws and is Excellent in its overall appearance. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 3.5 x 24 inches. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
