1921 Exhibits Babe Ruth, boldly signed by Ruth in blue fountain pen atop his image. Beckett Authentication Services has encapsulated the card and graded the signature MINT 9. The combination of this particular image of Ruth, with his hands on his knees in a fielding pose, together with the near flawless signature, makes this perhaps the most attractive Babe Ruth signed card we have ever seen, let alone offered. Ruth, of course, is the key card from this set, which is one of the earliest issues picturing him as a member of the New York Yankees. This is the first signed example of this card we have ever handled, and we have seen only one other at auction in the past twenty years. The card displays a number of moderate-to-heavy creases, a small tear, chipping along the borders, and a few tiny abrasions. A 1983 Babe Ruth commemorative stamp, along with a "First Day of Issue" postal cancellation (postmarked July 6, 1983), and the outline of a former strip of tape appear on the reverse. A spectacular rare Ruth-signed card and one that would be a highlight in even the most advanced collections. Full LOAs from Steve Grad, Brian Sobrero, and Charlie Price/Beckett Authentication Services and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $10,000. Estimate (open).
