Graded GOOD+ 2.5 by SGC (submitted by REA). Very pleasing 1887 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer Mike "King" Kelly (#254-4 pose), identified as "$10,000 Kelly." This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. Kelly earned this nickname when he was sold from Chicago to Boston following the 1886 season for this then-unheard-of sum. This has always been one of our favorite Kelly cards, in part because of the elaborate background, and in part because of the pose. The card displays even wear on the corners and the contrast is just a little light. The blank reverse has moderate soiling but free of the common flaws (paper loss, glue residue, writing, etc.) associated with examples from this popular series. This is a very presentable example of one of the most striking cards in the Old Judge set of the legendary Mike "King" Kelly, one of nineteenth-century baseball's greatest stars. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
