Graded GOOD 2 by SGC (submitted by REA). Very attractive 1887 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer John Ward (pose #478-5). This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. Ward is recognized as one of the most important and influential players of the nineteenth century. In addition to being a star pitcher, and later a standout shortstop for the New York Giants during the 1880s, he was also one of Major League baseball's few true scholars. Ward was a college graduate (Penn State), and he later earned a law degree from Columbia. In 1890, Ward served as the leader of the short-lived renegade Players' League. Superb photo quality, strong corners, and outstanding centering. The blank reverse displays a few light stains. Several small spots of foxing on the front contributes to the assigned grade. This is very pleasing low-grade example of one of the key Hall of Famer cards of the N172 Old Judge series. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
