Graded EX 5 by SGC (submitted by REA). This is the ONLY example graded at this level by SGC with none higher! Magnificent high-grade example of Hall of Famer Old Hoss Radbourn (hands at chest pose) from the popular N284 Buchner Gold Coin series. This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. Buchners are unusual in that they feature generic illustrations of the ballplayers rather than the actual likeness of the identified player. We have often noted that the substantial mustache on the artwork of the player on this card gives the illustration the feel of an actual likeness (Radbourn had a similar substantial mustache). Though this may be just a coincidence, we hope it is not! The card displays light wear on the corners, brilliant colors, flawless registration, and centered to the left. The reverse has a few light tobacco stains with the advertising boldly printed. This is a stunning Hall of Famer example from the Buchner set, one of the few full-color baseball-card sets of the nineteenth century, and one of the most artistically interesting, distinctive, and classic baseball-card sets of the 1880s.
