Graded FAIR 1.5 by SGC (submitted by REA). Rare type card of St. Louis Browns owner Chris Von Der Ahe from the fascinating N284 Buchner Gold Coin set. Von Der Ahe was one of the most prominent team owners of the nineteenth century. Buchners are unusual in that they feature generic illustrations of the ballplayers rather than the actual likeness of the identified player. Chris Von Der Ahe, however, is of special note as he is the only subject in the entire set to be honored with an actual portrait likeness, and this (along with his great prominence as the owner and president of the World Champion "Brownie Champs") makes this card one of the most interesting of all nineteenth-century cards and one of the most important cards in the N284 Buchner set. The offered card displays a flawless, crisp image, with bold colors, slightly rounded corners, and centering toward the bottom right. Moderate creasing (visible form the back) and tobacco stains on the front account for the assigned grade. This is an extremely presentable example of a very prominent baseball figure from the Buchner Gold Coin tobacco set, one of the few full-color baseball-card sets of the nineteenth century, and one of the most artistically interesting, distinctive, and classic baseball-card sets of the 1880s. Reserve $100. Estimate (open).
