Graded EX 60 by SGC. Stunning high-grade sample of one of the most revered of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues: the 1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card series. The offered card features Chicago outfielder Jimmy Ryan (Pose #396-4) in front of an elaborate stadium background. This is an outstanding and ideal N173 example. One of the game's early power hitters, Jimmy Ryan led the National League in home runs, hits, and doubles for Chicago in 1888. He was a leader in the movement that established the Players' League in 1890. Ryan was one of the game's most durable stars. Many believe that his impressive statistics, which include 2,502 hits and a lifetime .306 batting average over eighteen seasons, qualify him for consideration for induction to the Hall of Fame. Superb example, with flawless contrast and tremendous detail. Extraordinarily bold and crisp. The blank reverse is mainly clean with two small red spots at the upper corners, which is likely responsible for the downgrade. This is an outstanding sample from one of the most revered and substantial of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
