Addendum (11/21; 2:00 PM): Please note that the dating on this card has been updated to reflect additional research provided to REA that more accurately dates the Novelty Cutlery set to 1910.
Graded FAIR 1.5 by SGC (submitted by REA). Extremely attractive example of one of Tris Speaker's most impressive cards, from the rare and highly regarded PC805 postcard set issued by the Novelty Cutlery Co. of Canton, Ohio, in 1910. This newly discovered card is part of a fresh-to-the-hobby collection of nine Novelty Cutlery postcards consigned to this auction by the family of the original owner (whose name happens to be written on the back of all the cards). Speaker is, naturally, one of the key Hall of Famers from this highly prized set. The PC805 series is universally recognized as one of the most desirable of all baseball postcard issues. These cards have always been appreciated by collectors both for their extreme rarity and distinctive style. Well centered with even corner wear, no creases, and a crisp image. The reverse has pencil writing (name and address of the original owner). Do not be fooled by the modest grade! This card has an appearance far superior to its technically accurate grade and would easily grade VG if not for the writing on the back. This is an extremely attractive example of one of Speaker's most elusive early cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
