Scarce E107 Breisch-Williams card of Philadelphia Athletics catcher Ossee Schreckengost. Highly rated by Connie Mack as a defensive catcher and handler of pitchers, Schreckengost and Hall of Famer Rube Waddell formed a devastating duo for the early Athletics. Schreckengost despised shin guards (which were invented near the end of his career), and used a one-handed catching style over fifty years before it became an accepted technique. The image on this card is bold, with strong contrast and excellent centering. Graded POOR 10 by SGC due to light creases, a small area of paper residue on the front, and evidence of album removal on the back. The desirable advertising reverse is impacted by the back damage. A relatively affordable sample from the very desirable E107 set. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
