Graded FR 1.5 by SGC (submitted by REA). This extremely rare E101 "Set of 50" candy card features the legendary Ty Cobb leaning on his bat. This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. While Ty Cobb was included in virtually every candy-card issue from the 1910 era, this yellow-background pose of Cobb is considered by many to be the most attractive of the few Cobb caramel-card designs. The manufacturer of E101 is unknown. The fronts are identical in design to the E102 "Set of 25" related issues. Of special note, this card is considered by some collectors to be Ty Cobb's rookie card, though a number of other issues can also lay claim to that important distinction. It is, without question, one of Cobb's earliest cards, and is very likely "tied" for the earliest insert card ever issued of "The Georgia Peach." Bold colors, flawless registration, and centered to the left. The reverse simply reads: "This card is one of a set of 50 Base Ball Players - Prominent Members of National and American Leagues." A heavy vertical crease to the right of Cobb's image and honest corner wear contributes to the modest grade. In 1909, Cobb led the league in every major batting category including batting average, hits, runs scored, total bases, home runs, and RBI. This is very attractive low-grade example of one of Cobb's most classic and striking cards.  Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
