Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. A very attractive mid-grade example of Dennis Sullivan (Chicago team variation) from this extremely rare candy issue. Sullivan happens to be a very interesting subject in the E97 set. It is not clear if this card is Dennis Sullivan or Billy Sullivan. This card is known to exist in two variations: with the team identified as Chicago and also as Boston. Billy Sullivan played for Chicago, but not Boston. Dennis Sullivan never played with Chicago, and played for Boston briefly in 1907, years before the E97 set was issued. The confusion of who this card was intended to represent is no doubt related to the fact that it was issued with two different team identifications. Because the card pictures Sullivan in a Boston uniform, our best guess is that the player pictured is actually Dennis Sullivan, and was intended to be Chicago's Billy Sullivan, and the error was addressed by changing the team identification. The offered card has a crisp image with bold colors, light corner wear, and outstanding centering. A crease near the lower right corner solely accounts for the assigned grade. The back is clean with bold brown text. This is a very attractive, fascinating, and rarely offered example of the Sullivan, Chicago variation, from the very scarce E97 Briggs Co. set. Reserve $200.
