Near-complete set of E102 Anonymous “Set of 25” is composed of twenty-two of the twenty-nine cards in the set, including six Hall of Famers, highlighted by Nap Lajoie. This set is almost never seen in complete or near-complete set form. The manufacturer of this 25-card set is unknown. The fronts are identical in design to their E101 counterparts and can most easily be distinguished by the attractive black-printed checklist of the 25-card complete set on the reverse of each card. Four of the players are found with two variations for a total of 29 cards. This extraordinary E102 collection is missing Cobb, Doyle/throwing, Mathewson, Miller/batting, Smith, and both Wagners (throwing and batting) for completion of the 29-card master set. We have selected two cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. The collection consists of the following: Bender (Gd, HOF), Bescher (Pr-Fr), Chase (GOOD 2), Collins (GOOD 2, HOF), Crawford (Fr, HOF), Donovan (Vg), Dooin (pen marks on reverse, otherwise Gd), Dougherty (Gd), Doyle/batting (Vg), Evers (Pr, HOF), Kleinow (Gd), Knabe (pen marks on reverse, otherwise Gd), Lajoie (Pr, HOF), Lobert (Gd), Magee (Vg), Miller/fielding (Fr), Murphy (Gd, Schaefer (Gd), Schmidt (Pr), Shean (Pr), Tinker (Pr, HOF), and Zimmerman (Gd). Overall, the set presents at a level superior to the technically accurate assigned grades. Caramel cards, because they were issued with candy, one card per package, did not easily escape damage or hold up well to wear over the years. Despite the condition flaws, this is still a very pleasing near-complete set of this scarce early caramel issue. Total: 22 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
