Presented is a near-complete set consisting of twenty-five (out of thirty) cards plus six duplicates from the E98 “Set of 30” candy-card issue, highlighted by thirteen Hall of Famers, including two Nap Lajoie, two Johnny Evers, and Frank Chance. Missing only Bresnahan, Cobb, Mathewson, Wagner, and Young for completion, four of which appear individually elsewhere in this auction. The manufacturer of E98 is unknown, and the set may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E94 specifically); this is an entirely different set even though it uses many of the same subjects and poses. For many years, E98s were among the scarcest of the 1910-era caramel cards, but the recent “Black Swamp Find” has changed the population dramatically. E98s have always been very desirable, and their increased availability and noteworthiness due to the find may have actually increased the demand as more collectors have become familiar with the set. Seventeen Hall of Famers are featured within this set (twelve of which are included in this lot), which also drives its popularity. E98s are found with four different background colors: blue, green, orange, and red. All four colors are represented in this lot. Four cards are graded and encapsulated by SGC. This near-set consists of the following: Bender (GOOD+ 2.5, HOF), Bridwell (Gd), Brown (Pr-Fr, HOF), Chance (Fr, HOF), Chase (Fr), Clarke (VG 3, HOF), Collins (Pr-Fr, HOF), two Coombs (Fr and Pr), Dahlen (Pr), Davis (Pr), Dooin (Pr-Fr), two Evers (both Pr, HOF), Ford (Pr), Jennings (Fr, HOF), Kling (Pr-Fr), two Lajoie (POOR 1 and Pr, HOF), Mack (Pr, HOF), McGraw (pencil on reverse, otherwise Fr, HOF), two McLean (Gd and Pr), two Meyers (both Pr-Fr), Mullin (Fr), two Tenney (Vg and Pr), Tinker (GOOD 2, HOF), Vaughn (Vg), and Walsh (Pr, HOF). This group represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire a relatively affordable foundation for the assembly and completion of this popular and rare set. The equivalent SMR value for just the four SGC-graded cards is $815. Total: 31 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
