Rare early 1900s baseball silk featuring a female ballplayer and an assortment of baseball rebuses. This is the first example of this attractive baseball textile that we have offered and we can recall having seen only one other at auction in the past 20 years. The image of the beautiful woman dominates the piece, while the fifteen different baseball-related rebuses and illustrated definitions, most of which are comical in nature, surround the perimeter. The printed credit in the lower left corner reads "Copyright 1907 Campbell, Metzger, and Jacobson." These pieces were often issued with the intention of being made into pillowcases, or other related coverings. Since most were used in that manner, and later discarded due to wear, few have survived. This is one of those rare exceptions, which now presents as a beautiful wall display. The silk (22 x 22.5 inches visible dimensions), displays a few minor scratches that in no way detract from its apparent Excellent condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 32 x 32 inches. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
