Presented is a remarkable N175 "Small" Gypsy Queen of New York Giants Hall of Famer John Ward featured in a horizontal sliding pose (pose #478-8). This is the first example of this Ward card that we have ever seen! Gypsy Queen was one of Goodwin's tobacco brands. This card is the same size and general format as N172 Old Judge, but with a slightly different design, and advertising for Goodwin's Gypsy Queen brand of tobacco. There has always been some confusion as to the catalog number of the smaller Gypsy Queens (similar in size to N172s and not to be confused with the even rarer large N175 Gypsy Queens, of which nine different cards are known) because the American Card Catalog does not distinguish between the two sizes of cards represented by "N175." All N175 Gypsy Queens are rare and unusual, but this is also a horizontal example featuring a key Hall of Famer, making this card all the more distinctive in numerous ways. This card displays strong photo quality, light corner wear, and a clean blank reverse. Encapsulated as Authentic by SGC (submitted by REA) due to an irregular cut along the bottom, which has partially impacted the text. This is one of the few horizontal pose N175 Gypsy Queens, and among the even rarer ones featuring a Hall of Famer. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
