Graded VG/EX 4 by SGC (submitted by REA). Superb 1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card featuring Al Myers (#338-1 pose) of the Washington Nationals in a striking portrait pose. All N173 Old Judge cabinets are naturally rare, but this is a particularly noteworthy example in that it has an extremely rare brown mount. According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, "The vast majority of cabinet mounts are yellow in color. However, cabinets have also been found with brown, black, pink, and (in a few rare cases) red mounts." In addition to being a rare brown-mount example, Myers is featured in a desirable portrait pose with his arms folded. There are very few portraits in the N173 Old Judge cabinet series. Because they are so distinctive, collectors have always gravitated toward them. The image on this card is extremely bold, with strong contrast and tremendous detail. Very bright, crisp, and clean, both front and back. This is only the eighth brown-mount N173 that we can recall offering in the last two decades! This is an extremely attractive, exceedingly rare N173 brown-mount example, and an ideal sample of this significant nineteenth-century rarity from one of the most revered and substantial of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues.
