Near-complete set of seven baseball players from the 1888 N162 Goodwin Champions set, considered by many to be the single most beautiful of all the nineteenth-century tobacco issues. Each card is graded and encapsulated by SGC (submitted by REA). A total of eight baseball players are included in the N162 set, and only Anson is missing (offered individually as a separate lot in this auction) from this lot to complete the subset. The offered grouping of ballplayers includes three Hall of Famers (Brouthers, Keefe, and Kelly) and three other major prominent stars of the day (Andrews, Caruthers, and Glasscock). The collection consists of the following: Andrews (POOR 1), Brouthers (Authentic), Caruthers (VG/EX 4), Dunlap (POOR 1), Glasscock (GOOD 2), Keefe (FAIR 1.5), and Kelly (POOR 1). This group offers a rare opportunity to acquire an extremely presentable yet still relatively affordable near-complete set of one of the most desirable of all nineteenth-century baseball cards. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grades (excluding the one Authentic) is $1,700. Total: 7 cards. This outstanding lot originates from the collection of legendary pioneer collector Paul Pollard. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+.
