Graded NM+ 86 by SGC. This is the ONLY example graded at this level by SGC with none higher! Absolutely stunning ultra high-grade example of New York Giants Hall of Famer John Ward in a classic batting stance (pose #478-6) from the 1889 N172 Old Judge series. Ward is recognized as one of the most important and influential players of the nineteenth century. In addition to being a star pitcher, and later a standout shortstop for the New York Giants during the 1880s, he was also one of Major League baseball's few true scholars. Ward was a college graduate (Penn State), and he later earned a law degree from Columbia. In 1890, Ward served as the leader of the short-lived renegade Players' League. The offered example is crisp and clean, with strong photo contrast, outstanding centering, and four strong corners. The blank reverse is perfectly clean. This is a very striking, exceptionally high grade example of one of the key Hall of Famer cards in the N172 Old Judge series. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
