Graded GOOD+ 2.5 by SGC. Outstanding N172 Old Judge card featuring Hall of Famer Tommy McCarthy in a catching pose (#301-5). This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. McCarthy's statistics are unimpressive for a Hall of Famer, but his creative innovations left an unforgettable mark on the game. McCarthy had played for manager Frank Selee's Oshkosh champions in the North Western League in 1887, and after four years in the American Association was reunited with Selee in Boston. Selee encouraged innovative baseball, and McCarthy is credited with perfecting, if not inventing, the hit-and-run; runner-to-batter signals; and an outfield trap, designed to freeze forced baserunners, so that if the runner stayed on base McCarthy would trap the ball and get at least a force out and possibly a double play. This card presents as Vg-Ex, with strong photo contrast and image quality and even corner wear. Surface wear along the top border accounts for the modest assigned grade. A superb N172 example of Tommy McCarthy, worthy of any N172, Hall of Fame, or nineteenth-century card collection. Reserve $300.
