This scarce advertising envelope cover, which promotes Goodwin & Co.'s line of Old Judge Cigarettes and Smoking Tobacco, dates from the late 1880s and was issued at approximately the same time as the company's famed N172 Old Judge tobacco card set (1887-1890). The Old Judge trademark and advertisement is printed in black and gold on one side and the Goodwin & Co. return address is boldly printed at the top in red on the address side. Addressed by hand to a "Mr. John Enyr of San Francisco, Cal" and postmarked in New York. The fact that this envelope has survived for more than 130 years at all is very impressive, and to do so in relatively presentable condition is all the more remarkable. This is an outstanding nineteenth-century tobacco advertising piece and the fact that it promotes Old Judge cigarettes makes it of special interest to both advertising and card collectors. The envelope (5-7/8 x 3-3/8 inches) displays moderate handling wear, including light toning, moderate creases, and one side edge is cleanly opened. In Good condition overall. Reserve $100.
