Graded EX 5 by SGC (submitted by REA). Very attractive 1887 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer John Ward (pose #478-3). Ward is recognized as one of the most important and influential players of the nineteenth century. In addition to being a star pitcher, and later a standout shortstop for the New York Giants during the 1880s, he was also one of Major League baseball's few true scholars. Ward was a college graduate (Penn State), and he later earned a law degree from Columbia. In 1890, Ward served as the leader of the short-lived renegade Players' League. The offered example is crisp and clean, with strong photo contrast, outstanding centering, and light wear to the corners. The blank reverse displays light toning and minor surface creases. This is a very striking example of one of the key Hall of Famer cards in the N172 Old Judge series. Reserve $1,000.
