1887 Kalamazoo Bats team card of the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association issued by Chas. Gross & Co. All Kalamazoo Bats team cards are extremely rare. This team is highlighted by Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson and Harry Stovey, a major star of the day who many believe deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, both of whom are standing in the back-row center. Although the card has numerous flaws, including heavy creasing, four pinholes, and an ink stamp on the reverse (wet-sheet transfer on front), the offered example displays a strong photograph with ideal contrast and perfect focus. Encapsulated as Authentic by SGC (submitted by REA). The Athletics is a particularly interesting card in the series as most of the Kalamazoo Bats individual player cards, of course, feature Philadelphia players. The players on this team card were also each honored with an individual Kalamazoo Bats card. Only six different teams are known to exist. No new teams have been discovered since the 1960s, so the set appears to be complete at six. This is a very presentable example of this nineteenth-century tobacco-card rarity. Reserve $500.
