Extremely attractive mid- to high-grade 108-card complete set of this classic 1930s gum-card issue plus two key variations (Lombardi and Greenberg error cards). This collection is highlighted by thirty-eight Hall of Famers and, of course, includes all twelve of the rare high-number series cards (#97-108), which have always made this issue so difficult to complete. Condition is 16% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, 67% Vg-Ex to Ex, and 17% Gd to Vg (including eight lesser and a few that measure small). We have selected eleven cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: #1 Grove (VG 3), 2 Simmons (Pr-Fr), 3 Maranville (Fr), 9 Cochrane (Ex), 11 Dickey (Ex), 14 Terry (Vg-Ex), 16 L. Waner (Ex), 17 Frisch (Vg-Ex), 18 Hafey (Vg-Ex), 27 Traynor (VG/EX 4), 28 Lopez (NM+ 7.5), 29 Rolfe (Nr/Mt), 30 Manush (Ex-Mt+), 31 Cuyler (ink spot on reverse, otherwise Ex+), 32 Rice (Vg-Ex), 35 Averill (Ex+), 36a "Earnie" Lombardi (EX/NM 6), 36b "Ernie" Lombardi (Vg/Vg-Ex), 39 Hubbell (Ex), 43 Lyons (measures a bit small, otherwise Nr/Mt), 44 Hornsby (VG/EX+ 4.5), 48 Ferrell (Ex), 50 Ott (EX+ 5.5), 54a Greenberg/"Greenburg" error (Pr), 54b Greenberg (EX 5), 59 Bottomley (Ex), 60 Ruffing (Vg), 64 Foxx (EX+ 5.5), 66 Medwick (Ex-Mt), 74 Lazzeri (NM 7), 77 Gehringer (EX+ 5.5), 83 Waner (Ex), 91 Harris (Ex-Mt), 95 Appling (Ex due mostly to centering), 97 Lopez (Vg), 99 Traynor (Vg-Ex), 100 Averill (Ex), 103 Dickey (Fr), 104 Rolfe (Ex+), 105 Lombardi (EX 5), and 108 Berger (Vg). This is a very sharp-looking complete set (plus two variations) of one of the 1930s' most popular issues. The equivalent SMR value for just the eleven graded cards (factoring in the five half grades at the lower whole-grade level) is $2,340. Total: 110 cards (set of 108 plus two variations). This lot originates from the collection of legendary pioneer collector Paul Pollard. Reserve $1,000.
